Sam Brewer

Hey! I’m Sam Brewer, and I’m the Vice-President of the Lawrence Student Democrats. Just like Kamala! I’m a junior Government major/Religious Studies minor, and I originally joined the board back in the winter of 2022. I served for a year and a half as Outreach Coordinator prior to assuming my current role.

I like doing political work because it’s fun to actually know that you could be the difference between a candidate winning and losing, especially in a state like Wisconsin. I did a lot of political work in high school, so I was looking for a similar community here at Lawrence and it’s been awesome to watch this group continue to grow and thrive over the last three years. I'm originally from Saint Cloud, Minnesota and was first drawn to political action following the 2018 Parkland high school shooting. After attending the March for Our Lives in Washington, DC, I began volunteering for family friend and candidate for Minnesota State House (and later elected State Senator), Aric Putnam. Through the Putnam campaign, a group of around 15 other high schoolers and I founded the Young People’s Collective in early 2018; a group that works to elect progressive candidates and advance the concerns of high school and college-aged students throughout central Minnesota. Since then, I have worked for the Minnesota Democratic Farmer-Labor Party during both the 2020 and 2022 election cycles as an outreach and organizing fellow in MN State Senate District 14, helping in 2020 to flip the competitive district blue for the first time in a decade.

I’m a member of Lawrence’s cross-country and track teams, the Vice-President of the Lawrence Nordic Ski Club, and also a member of Lawrence’s Hillel chapter. As you might guess, in my free time I like to run and ski, but honestly anything that gets me outside with people is pretty cool.
